21 Sept 2000: Driving
-- Ciao! Eric and I took our Italian drivers license tests today and
we both passed. That was different. We basically had to memorize 50
very unusual road signs. I got one wrong about trains. Lisa
3 October 2000: A Taste of France-- Off To Corsica:
Eric and I are thinking that we may try to get to Corsica this weekend if
he gets Monday off for Columbus day. We will catch a bus to Santa Theresa,
and than catch a ferry to Corsica. We would like to rent a car once we get
there in Bonificio, for Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Do you think that you
could see if there are any car rental places in
Bonificio? Someone
said that hertz is there. Also how much it would cost a day. Also if you
know of any places of interest there. The military gave me a handout, but
it is not very good. It only costs $15 round-trip on the ferry for one adult.
Pretty good. I am excited about going, even if we just make it to the one
town.
Well I am taking an Italian language class this week. It is 3 hours a day.
Lots of vocab! Having had French really helps alot. Ciao Lisa
24 October 2000: We got our car today!!!!! Yes we are now
Independent people. However we are waiting for the gas station to open up,
because they are all closed for Roposso. This is when everything closes between
1-5 for their rest time. Kind of a hassle that we have had to learn to live
around.
The weekend went well. The Church that we went to was the military one over
on La Maddalena. Yum the food was good. I found out that Eric has only been
to a few potlucks in his life. Wow what a concept, I think I grew up at a
potluck dinner. He really likes them though. I think he would really like
Hawaii. Lisa
29 October 2000: Off the Tourist Map!
Well get out your highlighter, because we took the car and did
some driving today. We went directly south of Olbia, after driving
around Olbia, towards a town called Loiri (my spelling might be a little
off) and down a dirt path that led us to an old castle ruin which we had
to hike up to, Castle Padres. Then just beyond that we went to a Tomb where
sacrifices were made--dated way back to 1800 b.c. and before. It was very
cool, and had some of those weird rock formations going on with a tunnel
thing which I got in and walked through. There was no sign for these places,
but we found them in a Sardegna book that I picked up.
We then headed back up to Olbia and out south towards
Golfo
Arranci where there was supposed to be another ancient sacrificial
area. This one had a small sign, but when we went down the dirt road we hit
a locked fence. So we parked the car and jumped the fence and began walking.
We must have walked over a mile and could find nothing, but saw something
under some overgrowth. We decided to head back because even thought the book
said this one was more visited and in better condition, it looked like the
trail was not very travelled. Next we headed to Golfo Arranci--looked around
and then headed up the Costa Smerelda and back through Arzzechenia to Palau.
Wow it was nice to get out and be adventurous! Plus this book got us out
to places where we were the only ones around. It was written locally, and
translated into British English. I am making notes in the book, so as to
keep track of what we have seen, or tried to see. All right, hope all is
well with you! You were sure on my mind during our explorations. I will have
Eric send some Pictures. Ciao Lisa
