"Toilet Trivia & Tips"

London's Harrod Department Store Receipt entitles you to 1 free trip to their classy "tourist sight" quality women's restroom according to Nancy Donigan of Oahu.  She said she ran back and got the receipt from their Harrod's Tea Room and qualified.  Otherwise it costs L1--the most expensive toilet fee in Europe.

PS Both McDonalds and Burger King also require a purchase in Europe. Get toilette key with food order.

London 's Underground Toilets are some of the cleanest in Europe. Apparently the custodial staff of each tube station competes with other tube stations for a coveted plaque of recognition for their cleanliness.

Paris Gare du Nord Metro Toilets are co-ed

Expect to pay to use toilets in Europe. The usual Tip is equivalent to 25 cents. Keep change available for these times.  You make walk into a "toilette" that has coin operated boxes on the stall doors.  If not--look around for a tip dish and an attendant. Both are probably around some where. You will find public buildings and museum restrooms to be free with the latter having some of the prettiest.

Men, don't be surprised if the attendant is a woman in the Mens's room--and she does her business of sweeping and cleaning around you as you do your business at the urinal..

Traveling in Greece or Turkey or other Eastern Countries?  Some of these places still have very delicate plumbing which cannot handle flushed toilet paper.  One client told me she plugged up the plumbing in her Greek host home by flushing the TP.  The custom is to drop the used TP in a special waste container.

Asking for a "Bath Room"  in Europe will likely get you a room with a shower or tub or the answer "We don't have one".  Ask for a "Toilette" or WC.

Here are some Photos Ron Young of Oahu took on his Spain travels November of 99.

The "Bedete" is found in most local accommodations --even in rooms that have facilities down the hall

Squat Toilet found in local Spanish restaurant.  Actually very easy to use, ladies
