Point to Point Train Tickets

Check your routings and schedules to make sure your ticket is following the route you want. Also check if seat reservations are required on some routes and not on others. If checking a route for a night train trip, check for type of sleeping berths available on your train.

TERC can help you with this or you can browse through TIMETABLES YOUR SELF and find the routing that fits your itinerary and budget.

You have up to 6 months to use a Train Ticket from date of Purchase. Most seat and night train reservations needed with your point to point tickets or rail passes can be made 60 days prior to date of use.  THALYS and Eurostar Chunnel Tickets with Reservations can be made 120 days in advance.  TERC can book these for you when you are ready.        How to Order

Reservations for Seats plus Night Train Sleepers & Couchettes  see sample

Seat Reservations can be made for Point to Point Tickets and Rail Passes.  These Reservations are usually an additional charge to your Rail Pass or Train Ticket.  Some Countries (Scandinavia-Spain-Portugal) require seat reservations for ALL rail trips. French TGV SPEED TRAINS and some special Scenic routes i.e. Glacier Express require seat reservations.

From the USA SEAT Reservations cost $11-51+ per seat reservation with Italy and Belgium being the most expensive. You can avoid some of these costly reservation with a little research for schedules to find trains that don't use high speed trains and take 10-30 minutes longer to reach your destination.

Some tickets include the price of the reservation in the purchase price of the ticket. These tend to be Eurostar Chunnel Tickets, Thalys, X2000,  Talgo and AVE trains and an increasing number of Hotel Night trains between France and Switzerland or Italy or Spain.  Railpass holders get a discounted reservation price for these trains.

Reservations are MANDATORY for Premier Trains such as these Speed Trains:  France = TGV; Spain = Talgo or AVE;  Belgium = Thalys; Italy = Eurostar Italia; Scandinavia = X2000. Night Train Berths also require a reservation.

You can make separate reservations when you purchase your point to point tickets or railpass, or later in Europe at the local station or travel agency if you need more flexibility in deciding travel dates.

How to stretch your travel time and budget by using Night Trains.

Sleep your way to your destination by reserving a sleeper or couchette bed.  You can easily cover 1000 Km in one night, opening up many additional itinerary options.

Over night accommodations on European trains are very useful when you want to cover long distances.  And Flexi Railpass holders can get up to a "29 hour day" by using night trains. see the "7 PM" rule.

You can travel very comfortably on the many new hotel trains that are designed especially for night travel. There is a range of accommodation types on these trains  to suit every traveler's needs, from "Gran Class" Sleepers offering cabins with a wash basin and shower (see photo above)  to a "Sleeperette" reclining seat.

"Normal Night Trains" are generally less expensive than the hotel trains for berth reservations for alll types and classes. Again Budget Mindeded travelers may want to take the time to search out these out or ask TERC for these routings.tercmele@aol.com

Please note: Sometimes overnight trains do not carry normal seating cars, but only sleeping facilities. Some trains only have second class compartments available. Check timetables at DB timetables link to find out what your desired train routes offer or require.  (be sure to click on "DETAILS LINK" on bottom LEFT of schedule to get this information.)

ALL night train cars have an Attendant on each car who acts somewhat as a "security person". They will check you in at departure train ramp and will hold your passport and railpass or ticket while you sleep, if your train crosses a border during your trip.

Booking Night Train Berth Compartments & Types

You can book night train sleepers/couchettes when you arrive in Europe or when you purchase Rail Passes and tickets before you depart. We recommend making reservations if you are firm about dates you want to useand particularly during high & holiday seasons. You can make these reservations up to 60 days in advance. If your itinerary is flexible--then make these reservations as you travel at any train station or European travel agency for a small fee on top of the reservation fee.

Sleepers, Couchettes and Sleeperettes

Couchette Night train Reservations are $32 -44 per/person for most night trains on top of ticket price or railpass--and you sleep with 5 other Bunk Mates. (see Couchette photo)

Private Sleepers vary in price depending on type of train, compartment size (Double, Triple, or Quad) and distance it travels. Some Hotel trains have "same gender" Quad. compartments for singles who don't want to use co-ed 6 person couchette.

All Reservations  MUST BE USED FOR THE TIME AND DAY YOU RESERVE IT FOR or you loose the specific reservation (not your rail pass day or point to point train ticket). Tickets that include reservations in price Must BE USED FOR DATE OF RESERVATION or changed or refunded per/sale conditions. If you need flexibility, purchase these reservations as you need them in Europe and add them to your Rail Pass or point to point ticket.

A Couchette is a 6 person "mixed Gender" Compartment

Sleepers

Sleepers are 1st class bedrooms for one or two passengers, or bedrooms for two or three persons in 2nd class and are the most expensive. These come with regular beds with linen sheets, blankets and pillows. Each compartment usually has a power plug for razors and a wash basin with hot and cold water. The toilets are located at either end of your train car. You have control of keeping your bedroom locked through out your trip.

Couchettes

Couchettes usually have 4-6 open bunks with pillow and woolen blanket, which allow you to stretch out during the night, but afford no privacy. In first class there are four couchettes per compartment. In second class, there are six couchettes per compartment. In both first and second class couchettes, genders are mixed. Some Hotel trains have "same gender" Quad. compartments for singles who don't want to use co-ed 6 person coudhettes.

It is up to the couchette passengers to work out how they are going to keep their couchette locked as they leave/return to use toilets and wash rooms at the end of the car train.

Supplements for couchette coach accommodations: most non-hotel trains are $35 per/person per/train.

Per Person: USD$ 35 - 79, depending on train and distance.

Sleeperettes

Sleeperettes are reclining seats, available in some hotel trains ie Paris to Avignon. Seating is comparable to airline "Business Class" seating in size and comfort.  They cost about $79. and need to be checked for availability on a specific train & price before attempting to  reserve.

All Reservations  MUST BE USED FOR THE TIME AND DAY YOU RESERVE IT FOR or you loose the specific reservation (not your ticket)  If you need flexibility purchase these reservations as you need them in Europe and add them to your Rail Pass or point to point ticket. .

Railpass holders can get more travel out of their railpasses using night trains because of the "7:00 PM" Rule!  All night trains departing after 7:00 PM give the passholder the hours before mid-night FREE! On Flexi Railpasses you enter your night train ARRIVAL DATE on your pass.  This means you can use your railpass till mi-night on your arrival date. This can make it  more cost effective to do some side trips.  For example, if you are arriving in Florence you can leave your bags in a Locker and do the hour day trip to Pisa (SAVING $40+ RT FOR POINT TO POINT TICKETS) and then be back to Florence after lunch in time to check into your hotel.                                                                  Top of page
