A Little Quilt History

A visit to Europe will take you to the roots of American and Hawaiian quilting. It is believed the art of quilting was introduced to Europe by the Crusaders during the 11th and 12th centuries when they came home wearing quilted garments beneath their armor. When the "Great Freeze" occurred in the 14th century the need for warmer clothing and bed coverlets became essential throughout Europe and brought the art of quilting into its own--particularly for coverlets...    Applique` Quilting started in the French Royal Court in  the 14th century then moved on to England and other European countries.   Eventually European immigrants brought this art to America.  The high point of quilting popularity in Europe was the 16th century--then it suffered a gradual decline until recently.  Currently European quilters are showing a  resurgent interest in quilting --including American Patchwork.
