FAQ re. Train Travel & Passes

For information re. city  public transportation and shuttles to and from airports within Scandinavian countries  go to TERC's Guide to Scandinavia

Train travel is expensive in Scandinavia, making the ScanRail Pass worth serious consideration. And Scandinavian 2nd class trains are like Southern Select Pass first class trains. Expect to pay about $58 in addition to your pass for the "Norway in a Nutshell" train-boat-bus route. The ScanRail & Drive pass is an option if you are traveling a few days through Norwegian mountainous fjord country not well served by trains. Although second class is quite comfortable, for $5 to $10 a day extra you can go for first class in all categories. Plan on making $3-18 seat reservations for Long Rides. Another popular alternative of TERC clients the Eurail or Select Pass Passes

Additional Information & Deals

Norway
All express trains require a 25NOK ($3) reservation. Sleeping cars have 3 berths and cost 110NOK ($14), about the same as a 6-bed couchette elsewhere in Europe. Those wanting more privacy will pay 275NOK ($34) for a 2 berth room, 550NOK ($69) for a single. The scenic Myrdal to Flam trip now costs 50NOK, even for railpass holders. Norway offers point-to-point ticket discounts for certain "green departures" at off-peak times. Special "green departure mini-price tickets" take travelers from Oslo to any major Norwegian city for about 400NOK ($50). These are sold at any station, one day in advance. Seniors over 67 who ask get a 50% discount on tickets purchased in Norway. Youth and student discounts let you fly in Norway for about the price of a train ticket.
Sweden
The Reslust Card, which costs about 150 kr, or 50 kr if you're over 65, gives travelers 25-40% off on trains booked 7 days in advance.   SAS offers a standby fare to those under 26 for about 400 kr ($57) per flight.  High speed X200 train reservations cost about $7.

International ferry connections
When the train actually goes on the ferry (e.g., Denmark to Germany, Norway or Sweden), the crossing is usually free if you have a railpass that covers both countries. Stockholm to Finland on the Silja Line is free with Eurail and about half price with Scanrail. Other ferry rides are discounted anywhere from 20-100%. Point-to-point ferry prices can be more reasonable than train fares (for example, Oslo to Copenhagen for as low as $70). Check with ferry companies or travel agents for specifics once you're in Scandinavia or check:
