New Rules

The Eurail commission has taken over management and promotion of more passes that used to be administered by their own national rail systems. These now conform to standard Eurail rules such as the 7 p.m. rule for night trains, 85% refund allowed within one year of purchase, and only available to travelers who reside outside of Europe (and outside the Russian Federation, Turkey, or North Africa). Affected passes include Italy, Benelux, Holland, Hungary, Norway, Portugal, and Romania.

Wi-Fi Access for Rail Travelers

Wireless Internet access has a toehold in Europe's fast trains and train stations. Services are already available onboard Belgium's Thalys and Sweden's X-2000 departures and are promised for the future on France's TGV trains. Wi-Fi can be found in Eurostar departure stations on both sides of the Chunnel, plus 48 stations (and counting) in France. There is generally a small fee for use, with some exceptions. In stations, buy vouchers at France's "Relay" service points, or Eurostar ticket offices and Travel Centers.

Eurail Travel Bonuses

The Czech - Austria Pass covers the Airport Express bus from Prague Ruzyne airport to Prague Holesovice train station. The buses leave every 30 minutes from 05:00 to 21:00 in both directions. Prague Holesovice is located on Metro line C. This bonus is currently available until December 9th, 2006. Since the service is fully covered, it starts use of a flexipass travel day — don't bother with it unless you're also traveling by train that day.

German S-Bahn Exception: Passes that cover Germany are valid on the S-Bahn (local commuter service) that operates in major German cities. The exception is Berlin, where the Eurailpass is valid only on the S-Bahn services that connect the Deutsche Bahn rail stations of Berlin.

Paris – Italy (Artesia) Night Train Accommodations  Purchase Night Train

* Excelsior (shower and toilet) cabins have been discontinued and replaced by traditional sleepers with washbasin only.

* Second-class pass or ticket holders now qualify to book T4 (four-passenger) couchettes (they used to be first class). T4s on other routes through France may still require first-class documents.

* T3 (three-passenger) sleepers are now considered first class (they used to be second class).

* Passengers with sleeper or first-class TGV reservations may use the Artesia lounge at Paris-Bercy station.

* For point-to-point tickets, a new leisure fare (about 25% off regular one-way fares, but places are limited and restrictions apply) replaces youth and senior fares and offers on this night train.

Nice <--> Rome Station Change    Purchase Night Train

The Nice-Rome night train now arrives at Roma Ostiense station. Ostiense rail station is across the street from the Pyramide metro station.

Glacier Express Premium Service   Purchase Ticket or Reservation

"Premium" train stock runs on two trains per day in each direction (trains #904, 907, 908, & 911). Premium trains offer first- and second-class panorama cars, as well as headphones to listen to commentary in six languages. Premium also offers the option of meals and drinks delivered to your seat for an extra charge (payable on the train, not included in reservation fee). Pass coverage is the same as for standard departures. Standard trains on the same route still offer panorama cars in at least one class of service, as well as restaurant and bar cars attached for portions of the route (restaurant car requires separate reservation). Passholder reservations cost $32 (versus $20 for standard departures).

Luggage Tags Mandatory on French trains and Thalys

For security, all luggage must carry a luggage tag with the traveler's first and last name and current address. This applies to small hand luggage as well bags placed on storage racks above the seats or near the doorways of train cars. Free tags are available at all train stations in France. Luggage tags are also required on Thalys trains as of February, and on Eurostar.
